Description
In the Christian world, the fish is a symbol representing Christ, the God who became man. Perhaps for this reason, Beppe Sabatino titled the work on our cover The Soul Gatherer: we see a man with his hands immersed in the sea in a primordial gesture, almost ritualistic, which inevitably evokes the retrieval of the bodies of migrants submerged and consumed by the Mediterranean. That man is no longer a fisher of life, but of lost souls —forgotten people.
Beppe Sabatino (Palermo, 1961; lives between Milan and Fano) is an artist driven by a deep environmental commitment: a professor of Decoration at the Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino, his work exists at the border between painting and sculpture. His paintings are often enriched with elements in ceramic, wood, or iron, frequently giving his works an installation-like quality.
The image on our cover is a composition built on absences, on what we do not see but imagine: the work is wrapped in a tragic, sacred aura. Beppe Sabatino invites us to recognize it as a testimony to a collective mourning that unfolds in a dark and profound sea, a simulacrum of invisible bodies and faceless shadows.
