The Spanish choreographer and artist creates a new collectible cover for la Lettura: a self-portrait suspended between body, image and movement, now also available as an NFT-certified digital artwork.
A body becomes a sign. A figure, almost like an imprint suspended in space, stands against an immense red sun, still and magnetic, evoking the Japanese flag. This is the visual universe of Marcos Morau, the artist behind the new special collector’s edition of la Lettura.
Born in Valencia in 1982, Morau is one of the most acclaimed figures on the international choreographic scene. Created especially for la Lettura, his artwork brings together some of the defining elements of his artistic practice. Above all, the body: not simply an instrument of movement, but an image, a trace, a symbol and a means of exploring and questioning space.
Beyond the boundaries of dance
Marcos Morau’s artistic practice moves across different disciplines. Dance, theatre and photography coexist within a distinctive visual universe, where gesture meets image-making and the stage becomes a place suspended between reality and imagination.
It is precisely this ability to transcend the boundaries between disciplines that makes his work so distinctive. Movement is not simply represented: it becomes a way of giving form to fragility, uncertainty and the tensions of the human condition.
In the cover created for la Lettura, Morau’s self-portrait also moves beyond the traditional idea of portraiture. The figure becomes an essential presence, almost a graphic sign, while the large red disc behind it creates a symbolic geography in which East and West, stillness and movement, the individual and space enter into dialogue.
Geographies of Dance
The title of the work, Marcos Morau, Geographies of Dance, offers a key to its interpretation: the body as a territory to be explored, and movement as a force capable of continually redrawing its boundaries.
This vision also runs through Morau’s international career. Among his significant collaborations is his relationship with Oriente Occidente, the dance festival in Rovereto, where on 11 September he will present the world premiere of Living & Leaving: bodies searching for one another, swaying, meeting and allowing themselves to fall.
The work returns to some of the central themes of Morau’s artistic language: vulnerability, relationships, instability and the possibility of transforming uncertainty into movement.
